Seizing fake or false ID
You and your staff must seize ID that you reasonably believe to be fake or you believe it does not belong to that person.
Process of taking someone's ID
You must take a persons ID away from them if you reasonably believe it to be fake or false.
You can do this if they have attempted to:
- enter a licensed premises, or
- buy alcohol.
Step 1. Hold on to the ID
If you reasonably believe the ID is fake or false don't give it back.
Step 2. Give a seized ID advice card
Explain that you are required by law to seize suspected fake or false IDs.
Give them an advice card, so they can get more information or get their ID back.
Step 3. Record details in your incident register and notify
As soon as you can:
- record it in your workplace incident register
- store the ID in a safe location
- inform your supervisor, nominee or licensee of the incident.
Step 4. Complete the form and submit to Licensing NT
You must fill in a seized ID advice form and submit it with the seized ID to Licensing NT within 72 hours.

Submit them in person to a Licensing NT office in Darwin, Katherine or Alice Springs.
Outside of these towns, you must submit the form and a scanned copy of the seized ID by email to liquorcompliance@nt.gov.au.
