Introduction
Codes of practice have been developed to provide guidance on responsible gambling and gaming practices in the Northern Territory (NT).
They aim to minimise harm to individuals and the community from problem gambling.
Read the code of practice that applies to you.
Wagering operator
The Code of Practice for Responsible Service of Online Gambling 2019 applies to all online gambling licensed under the Racing and Wagering Act 2024.
It includes web-based, app and telephone betting on any device such as:
- computers
- tablets
- smartphones.
Casino operator
The NT Casino Code of Practice for Gaming Harm Minimisation 2023 PDF (620.8 KB) applies to casino operators licensed under the Gaming Control Act 1993.
Gaming machine operator
The Code of Practice for Responsible Gambling 2022 applies to gaming machine operators licensed under the Gaming Machine Act 1995.
Online gaming and lotteries
The NT Internet Gaming Code of Practice for Harm Minimisation 2025 applies to all internet gaming operators licensed under section 47D of the Gaming Control Act 1993.
It includes web-based, app and telephone betting on any device such as:
- computers
- tablets
- smartphones.
NT Code of Practice for Responsible Gambling 2022
If you’re a licensed gambling operator, you must comply with the Northern Territory (NT) Code of Practice for Responsible Gambling 2022.
The code provides guidance on how to promote responsible gambling and minimise its harm.
In addition to the code, you should put other strategies in place to further reduce harm.

Responsible service of gambling training
If you're a licensed sports bookmaker or betting exchange operator in the Northern Territory, you must ensure your staff are properly trained.
All gambling venue staff must complete responsible service of gambling (RSG) competency training.
This is required under the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering.

When to complete training
Staff must complete:
- initial training within one month of starting work
- refresher training each year.
How to complete training
Training is available online through TAFE Queensland.

Get refresher training for gaming staff
This page has information on refresher training programs for gaming staff and training providers approved by the Director of Gaming Control.
If you are a gambling provider operating electronic gaming machines you must make sure your staff complete refresher training every 3 years.
These programs are designed to help staff maintain a responsible gambling environment.
