2023 Barkly Complex Fires Review
The Barkly Complex Fires occurred over a 6 week period between August and October 2023 as a result of severe fire weather conditions.
These fires presented unique challenges due to their scale and the compounded factors of drought in preceding years followed by several years of cumulative rainfall creating high fuel loads, and concurrent fire incidents.
An independent review has been conducted which demonstrates strengths as well as areas for improvement in the current fire management practices.
The dedication of the volunteers, landowners, contractors, and staff involved is commendable, and the lessons learned from this incident provide valuable insights for enhancing fire management practices across the Territory.
