MVR cost saving initiatives
You can save on MVR services as part of a commitment to reducing financial pressures and easing the cost of living.
It includes:
- a no fee increase to light vehicle registrations until 1 July 2026
- an extra 12 months on your driver licence for free
- new 3-year registration options for your trailer.
No fee increase to light vehicle registration
Each year, vehicle registration fees usually increase slightly to match the rising cost of living.
With no fee increase on light vehicle registrations, the cost of registering your vehicle will stay the same until 1 July 2026.
There will be no yearly increases during this time.
What this means
- Fees will stay at their current rates until 1 July 2026.
- This is a freeze, not a reduction—fees are not being lowered, just staying the same.
- Refunds are not available unless you cancel your registration, as the fee freeze only applies to future payments, not past ones.
Which vehicles are included
The fee freeze applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less, including:
- cars
- small buses
- four-wheel drives
- motorcycles
- trailers.
How to apply
The correct fee will automatically be applied when you go to renew your registration. There is no refund available as it only applies to future payments.
Free 12-months driver licence
From 1 January to 30 June 2025, renewing your licence will automatically include an extra 12 months.
This applies whether you renew for one year or up to 10 years.
If your licence isn’t expiring, you can still apply to add the free 12 months.
What this means
If your licence:
- is due for renewal, you’ll automatically receive the 12-month extension when you renew.
- isn’t expiring, you can still apply to have an extra 12 months added.
- is limited to one or 2 years due to a medical condition, you may be eligible for special consideration.
If you already receive a free licence through other means, like pensioner concessions, you are not eligible for this offer.
How to apply
From 1 January to 30 June 2025:
- apply online or at an MVR office
- You cannot get the free 12 months at Australia Post.
New 3-year trailer registration option
From early December 2024, you’ll have the option to register your trailer (750 kg and under) for up to 3 years.
This means 750 kg aggregate trailer mass.
Benefits of a 3-year registration
- Less hassle - no need to renew each year.
- Save on fees - pay one admin fee instead of multiple.
- Avoid fee increases.
How it works
- When renewing or registering your trailer, select the 3-year option.
- The cost will be 3 times the current one-year fee, with only one admin fee applied.
How to apply
From early December 2024:
- You can apply online or at an MVR office
- You cannot apply for more than 2 years at Australia Post.
