Dog trailers over 4.5 tonnes
Dog trailers like all other heavy vehicle trailers pay registration fees according to the actual number of axles fitted to the trailer.
A dog trailer differs from other trailers because it has an axle or axle group at the front of the trailer that is steered by connection to its towing vehicle by a drawbar and a rigid axle or axle group at its rear.
The front axle of a dog trailer is fixed and cannot be disconnected without tools.
For the purpose of registration, a converter dolly with a quick release mechanism connected to a semi-trailer is not to be viewed as a dog trailer.
Dog trailers have a National Heavy Vehicle code of TD. After the TD code, there are a set of numbers which identify the actual number of axles at the front and the rear of the dog trailer.
For example, a dog trailer with a single axle at its front and a single axle at its rear would be issued a charge code of TD11 whereas a dog trailer with a double axle at its front and a tri-axle at its rear would be issue a charge code of TD23.
