Change your name and contact details: driver licence
If you change your name or address, you must contact the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) and update your information.
You can change the name on your licence by supplying certain documents to the MVR.
If your contact details change, you must notify the MVR within 14 days of changing to a new residential address.

Change your name
To change your name, you must supply original documents. Copies or certified copies will not be accepted.
Some documents you provide must be verified through the Australian Government's Document Verification Service.
This includes:
- marriage certificates
- change of name certificates.

For individuals
To change your name on your driver licence you must attend an MVR office with:
- your current driver licence
- and a change of name certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.
If you don't have a current licence
If you don't have your current driver licence to surrender you must have:
- at least one category A and one category B document
- and a change of name certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Change of name due to marriage
To change your name after getting married you must have:
- your current NT driver's licence
- at least one category A and one category B document
- one of the following documents issued by an Australian Births, Deaths and Marriages office:
- marriage certificate - if you are changing your name to your partner's surname
- change of name certificate - if you are changing your surname to a name that is not your partner’s surname.
Overseas marriage certificates, statutory declarations and commemorative marriage certificates will not be accepted as documents for evidence for name change.
Change your name due to separation or divorce
To change your name back to your maiden name, you need documents that link your married name and maiden name together.
You must have:
- your current NT driver's licence
- at least one category A and one category B document
- one of the following documents issued by an Australian Births, Deaths and Marriages office:
- marriage certificate
- change of name certificate
- divorce decree.
Change your contact details
To get a replacement driver licence with your new address details, you must provide the card number printed on the back of your licence for verification.
If you can’t provide your card number, a licence replacement fee will apply.
Once you have received your replacement licence, your old licence must be destroyed.
How to change your contact details
In person
You can change your details at a local participating Australia Post Outlet that provides MVR driver licence and vehicle registration services or visit your local MVR office.
By phone
You can change your details by calling 1300 654 628 if you meet all of the following:
- your licence is current
- you provide the card number on the back of your licence
- the MVR has your digital photo recorded
- your licence is not suspended or cancelled.
By email
You can send your new address and contact details and a scanned copy of the front and back of your current NT licence to mvr@nt.gov.au.
By mail
You can change your contact details by writing to:

To get a free replacement licence you must include a copy of the front and back of your current licence. If you can’t provide your card number a licence replacement fee will apply.
Online
You can update your address and contact details on the MVR quick pay website or through the NT Rego app.
To change your address and contact details online you will need:
- your customer ID number and your licence number, or
- your customer ID number and your registration number.
