Report a petroleum discovery

Find out about the reporting requirements for petroleum discovery.

It's considered to be a discovery when:

  • the presence of petroleum in a reservoir (an accumulation) is indicated during drilling
  • and the petroleum is shown to be producible.

When you must report

It is your responsibility to:

  • notify the Minister within 3 days of the discovery and before any public announcement.  Use the discovery notification PA s64 form.
  • submit a discovery evaluation within 3 months of the discovery.  Use the discovery evaluation report PA s64 form.

Report petroleum resource estimates

Resource estimates must follow the Society of Petroleum Engineers' (SPE) petroleum resources management system. Go to the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) website for details.

Revised estimates must be reported if a study results in updated petroleum quantities for a specific pool. Use the revised estimate report PR r66AAX form.
