The prosthetics and orthotics service is available to inpatients and outpatients at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Regional Hospital (RDPH).

The service includes:

  • supply
  • manufacture
  • fitting of prosthetic and orthotic devices.

Inpatients and outpatients can get support with:

  • amputation
  • orthopaedic injury
  • vascular injury
  • congenital illness
  • neuromuscular illness
  • diabetes with high risk feet.

The service is provided to all age groups.

Referrals are from health professionals only.

The prosthetics and orthotics service is available to inpatients and outpatients.

Inpatient services

The inpatient service provides support and specialist equipment to patients.

Includes support and specialist equipment for:

  • rehabilitation after amputation
  • episodes which significantly impair musculoskeletal function
  • fitting of braces for spinal protection
  • a device or aid for safe discharge.

They also provide services for:

  • amputees
  • paediatrics with musculoskeletal conditions
  • diabetic foot deformities
  • post-stroke.
Service exclusions

NDIS participants can't access these services if the following applies:

  • no change in amputation level/diagnosis
  • are currently receiving prosthetic and orthotic services from a private provider.

Outpatient services

The outpatient service is for ongoing review and management of patients requiring:

  • specialist customised prosthesis
  • orthotic devices.

Includes support and specialist equipment:

  • for mobility
  • to accommodate significant deformity
  • for intervention to prevent musculoskeletal deterioration.

They also provide support for:

  • amputees
  • paediatrics with musculoskeletal conditions
  • diabetic foot deformities
  • post-stroke.
Service exclusions

NDIS participants can't access these services if the following applies:

  • no change in amputation level/diagnosis
  • are currently receiving prosthetic and orthotic services from a private provider.

How to arrange a referral

Inpatient referrals are from admitting team only.

Your GP and health professionals can refer.

Referrals can be made by email, phone or email.
