RSV vaccination

From February 2025, the RSV vaccine will be free through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for those who are pregnant between 28 and 36 weeks gestation.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a very contagious viral infection that targets the upper airways and lungs.

It mostly affects babies and young children but adults can get it too.

Almost 8% of Aboriginal babies are hospitalised for RSV in the first 6 months of their life.

Premature babies and those with complex medical conditions also have higher rates of hospitalisation with RSV infection.
