Self-care dialysis therapies
You may be able to have your treatments at home or at a community facility.
Before you can do this your renal team will:
- assess your suitability
- train you so you can manage your treatment.
Types of dialysis you can do yourself
You can learn to do:
- peritoneal dialysis - where you change fluid bags through a tube connected to your abdomen, or
- haemodialysis - using a machine at home or a community facility.
Doing dialysis yourself can take a few weeks or months to learn.
Peritoneal dialysis training
The peritoneal Dialysis Centre is based at the Casuarina village in Darwin.
You may also be able to get training by a peritoneal dialysis nurse in your community.
You will have follow-up visits from a nurse.
Haemodialysis training
Home haemodialysis training centres are in Darwin at the Nightcliff rental unit and Alice Springs.
You may be able to start training at your usual haemodialysis units before going to the Nightcliff unit to finish.
