Renal Home Therapies
The Renal Home Therapies team provide specialist services for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
They are located at Bragg Place (building 15) of the Royal Darwin Hospital. There are street signs to help you locate the building.
The team includes:
- nurse practitioners
- specialist nurses
- an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioner
- an Aboriginal liaison officer
- administrative staff.
They work with you and your kidney doctor to meet your renal needs.
Renal dieticians, physiotherapy, occupational therapists, social workers and psychology services are also available.
What services are available
The CKD coordinators will help you understand the disease and provides tools to help slow its progression.
You will also be provided education on renal replacement options so you're prepared when:
- your kidneys fail and
- dialysis is needed.
To access this service, you must get a referral from your GP to see a kidney doctor.
The doctor will then refer you to the CKD coordinators if required.

The team can help you with pre and post-kidney transplant coordination and care.
This includes travel and admission to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where the procedure takes place.
You should discuss this procedure with your kidney doctor.
They will also refer you to the renal transplant nurses who will provide you with additional education and support.

When your kidneys fail, there are 2 options that will allow you to have dialysis at home by yourself or with family support.
These include:
- peritoneal dialysis (PD)
- home haemodialysis (HHD).
You can discuss these options with your kidney doctor or your CKD nurse who will then refer you to the PD or HHD team.
PD
The PD team focuses on training and educating patients and families.
They also provide ongoing support to communities when clients have returned home.
Training is mainly carried out in the at the Royal Darwin Hospital (building 15) but can occur wherever needed.
It can take 1 to 3 weeks, depending on your PD preference.

HHD
The HHD team can provide you with information on the HHD process and expectations.
If interested in HHD, the team will complete an assessment and make sure you have a safe location for dialysis.
It is recommended that you have a support person to help you.
If your assessment meets the criteria for HHD, you will be provided with:
- training at building 15 of the Royal Darwin Hospital over 5 days per week until you are fully trained
- ongoing phone support when you are at home.
HHD is not available for patients on holidays.

The supportive care nurse provides advice and support for those who may not want to do dialysis.
They also support advance personal planning, and symptom management.

Opening hours
- CKD coordination, transplant and supportive care - Monday to Friday from 8am to 4:30pm (excluding public holidays)
- Peritoneal dialysis - Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4pm (excluding public holidays)
- Home haemodialysis - Monday to Friday (including public holidays) from 7am to 3:30pm
