Royal Darwin Hospital renal unit

The renal ward at Royal Darwin Hospital is on the 7th floor and has 3 areas:

  • a ward
  • haemodialysis unit
  • transplant unit.

The medical team includes a renal:

  • Aboriginal liaison officer
  • care co-ordinator
  • social worker.

Renal ward

The 14 bed ward provides:

  • renal investigations
  • acute admissions
  • access problems
  • renal surgery
  • peritoneal dialysis
  • creation and revision of Arterio Venous Fistulas (AVF)
  • insertion of temporary and tunnelled lines
  • Tenckhoff catheter insertions.

Haemodialysis unit

The 6 chair haemodialysis unit caters for:

  • acute
  • chronic
  • end stage renal failure.
  • plasma exchange
  • inpatient dialysis
  • introduction and education for new patients
  • patients with complex medical or social issues needing intensive multidisciplinary involvement.

Transplant unit

The unit cares for post-transplant patients and prepares patients for renal replacement.

Opening hours

7 days a week from 7am to 9:30pm.

With an after-hours on call service.
