When you are owed bond money

When you move out of a rental property your bond money must be returned to you in full unless the landlord has claims for any of the following:

  • unpaid rent
  • cleaning
  • repair costs
  • lease break.

Moving out

You should talk to your landlord or agent when you move out so you know what costs may be deducted.

Leave your new address or your banking details so the bond can be sent to you once any outstanding work has been completed.

Unclaimed bond

If you don't claim your bond within six months, it will be transferred to The Tenancy Trust account managed by the Commissioner of Tenancies.

You may not have received your money for any of the following reasons:

  • the cheque has not been cashed
  • you have not given contact details or a forwarding address
  • you did not give bank account details to your previous landlord or agent.

    How to claim

    If your bond is being held in trust you can claim the money:

    1. Fill in a bond claim form. You should include all of the following:

    • your name
    • the address of the property
    • date you moved out
    • the amount of the bond.

    Bond recorded in more than one name

    You will only be given an equal share of the total amount unless:

    • you can show a bond receipt made out in your name alone
    • or give a letter of authorisation from the other contributors with a copy of their driver licence or other identification.
