Where they live

Tarpon adults are generally found at sea, but young inhabit river mouths, inner bays, and mangrove lined estuaries. 

In freshwater, they occur in rivers, lagoons, lakes, and swampy backwaters.

Size and age

Commonly grow to 50cm in the NT and have been known to live for 44 years.
