Mangrove jack

Scientific name

Lutjanus argentimaculatus.

Where they live

Adults are often found in groups around coral reefs.

Juveniles and young adults are commonly found in mangrove estuaries tidal creeks. 

Mangrove jack eventually migrate offshore to deeper reef areas, sometimes penetrating to depths in excess of 100m.

Size

Mangrove jack have been known to grow to 104cm, weigh 14.5kg  and live for up to 39 years.

Fishing tips

Baited hook or lure.

Mangrove jack are highly prone to barotrauma when caught from depths greater than 10m and should not be targeted for catch and release.
