Scientific name

Plectropomus leopardus.

Where they live

Coral trout inhabit coral-rich areas of lagoon reefs and mid-shelf reefs. 

Juveniles have a demersal existence in shallow water in reef habitats, especially around coral rubble.

Size and age

Max size 120cm with a maximum weight of 24kg. Reported maximum age is 26 years.

Fishing tips

Baited hook or jigs.

Coral trout are highly prone to barotrauma when caught from depths greater than 10m and should not be targeted for catch and release.
