Equipment funding for students with disabilities

If your child's therapist or healthcare team has recommended specialised equipment for use at school, there are situations where the school can help.

Who can request equipment funding

To request funding for equipment, your child must:

  • be attending a Northern Territory (NT) Government school or preschool
  • have a diagnosed disability
  • not be able to get the equipment through their NDIS fund
  • have had the equipment recommended by a healthcare team such as their doctor or therapist.

In addition, the equipment must:

  • cost more than $500
  • only be needed at school - for example, items that are needed all the time like a wheelchair, hearing aids or communication devices are not eligible
  • enable the child’s access to education
  • not be a computer or tablet device.

How to apply

Contact the school to discuss the recommendations made by your child’s healthcare team.

Testing the equipment

Equipment will be tested by your child before it is allocated to them. This is usually over a 2 to 4 week period.

This allows time to see if the equipment is a good fit.

If it is found suitable, the use will be reviewed again in 6 to 12 months after its purchase.

If your child changes schools

Arrangements can be made to transfer the equipment to schools within the NT.

Storage and maintenance

The equipment is for use at school and can't be taken home.

Maintenance is the responsibility of the school.
