Conferences for offending young people and victims

If a young person has been found guilty, the police or court may order them to attend youth justice conferences.

These conferences aim to make sure they:

  • understand and acknowledge the consequences of their actions
  • make amends for their offending and prevent re-offending by undertaking actions that give back to victims and the community
  • provide closure and restitution to victims affected by the crime who are invited to take part.

Who's involved

These conferences are provided by the Community Justice Service in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

Victims of Crime NT also help deliver them by providing support and assistance for victims to take part.

They ensure they have a voice, achieve outcomes and reach closure.

This increases the profile of conferencing as an option for victims of youth crime, as part of the process for:

  • sentencing
  • youth diversion
  • resolution.
