Burial grounds in the Northern Territory

Burial grounds are a type of declared burial area under the Burial and Cremation Act 2022.

Declared burial grounds

Private burial grounds that were dedicated under section 6(1) of the repealed Cemeteries Act 1952 are now considered burial grounds under the Burial and Cremation Act 2022.

There are 3 burial grounds that are intended for private use in the following locations:

  • Berry Springs
  • Humpty Doo
  • Pamayu.

To bury in a burial ground you'll need to:

  • have confirmation of consent from representative or interest holder for the land, and
  • submit a burial notification to the department.
