Responsible service of alcohol (RSA)
As a liquor licence holder, it is your responsibility to ensure that all staff involved in selling, serving or supplying alcohol hold a valid responsible service of alcohol (RSA) certificate.
Staff must complete an RSA course within 7 days of starting work at your licensed premises.
You must keep a register including a copy of your staff's current RSA certificate and refreshers.
Who needs an RSA certificate
You must ensure that an RSA certificate is held by anyone who:
- works in a bar, pub, restaurant, club or any venue that serves alcohol
- sells or supplies alcohol at your licensed premises
- supervises staff serving alcohol.
If you, as the licence holder, perform any of these duties, you must also complete RSA training.
RSA training covers:
- laws on selling and serving alcohol
- how to check ID and refuse service to intoxicated people
- responsible alcohol service practices.
Approved course providers
Only accept certificates issued by a recognised training organisation (RTO) that is registered to deliver RSA training.
This includes certificates from outside of the the NT.
Check the course provider list
The current course code is:
- SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol.
Look for the code and approved providers on the Australian Government National Training Register.
Fake or dishonest certificates
You must make sure each RSA certificate or refreshers is a true and valid certificate.
Some organisations offer training that is non-compliant, dishonest or misleading.
If you are unsure you can check with Licensing NT.
Interstate certificates and expiry
Someone who got their RSA interstate may not realise their certificate is no longer valid after 3 years in the NT.
To stay compliant, they can complete a free refresher course.
Free refresher course
A free refresher course is available on the NT refresh RSA website.
This must be completed every 3 years.
RSA certificate register
You must keep a staff register of RSA certificates and their refresher certificates.
Get register templates and learn more about keeping your records up to date.
