Keeping and moving goats
New tags
From 1 January 2025, sheep and goats must be tagged with an electronic identification device.
Read more about these changes for the National Livestock Identification System.
If you want to move goats around, into or out of the Northern Territory (NT), you must follow certain rules.
To move goats:
- into the NT from another state - you must submit an NT health certificate and waybill
- out of the NT to another state, you must submit an NT waybill and follow the relevant state's entry rules
- from your NT property to another NT property, you must submit an NT waybill.
Before you move them, remember to tag them using the National Livestock Identification System.
If you keep goats on your property, or move them into or out of the NT, you must have a property identification code (PIC). Find out how to get a PIC.
Health and management
You need good management practices to successfully farm goats in the NT.
Goats are susceptible to worms and can be resistant to worm drench treatments. An effective drenching program is essential.
