Learn to drive

To get your P plates, you must hold your learner driver licence continuously for at least six months.

If your licence has been suspended, disqualified, cancelled or allowed to expire, the six months will start from the date your learner licence becomes active again.

Any practical test you may have completed while your licence has been suspended, disqualified, cancelled or expired, the test will not be honoured and you will be required to complete another practical test to upgrade after waiting another six months.

You should get as much practice as possible in different driving conditions and use the Learner Drivers' Guide to record your progress.

It can take about 20 hours to learn how to operate the controls of a car and another 80 hours to learn how to become a low-risk driver.

Your supervising driver must have a full Australian driver licence and can be any of the following:

  • an adult relative
  • a friend
  • a driving instructor.
