Transgender and gender diverse services
Trans or transgender is a general term for a person whose gender or identity is different to their sex at birth or upbringing.
Your gender expression is unique and there is no right or wrong way to express it.
Read below to find out about support and appropriate health care guidance for transgender and gender diverse adults, children and adolescents in the Northern Territory (NT).

Transitioning
Transitioning is the process of changing gender from the one given at birth, to line up with your own sense of identity which can be physical, psychological, social and emotional.
How to change your name and/or gender marker
Changing your name and gender may take time and you might need to provide medical information. You might also need to pay a fee.
You can choose to nominate a preferred name on some records and identity documents.

Northern Territory Government

You can apply to change your sex or gender or your child's on an NT birth certificate if you were born in the NT.

You can change your Medicare, Centrelink and child support details as well as other Australian Government documents and records

Australian Passports can be issued to sex and gender diverse applicants. They can be re-issued to change gender status.

The below list contains information on support services available in the NT and Australia-wide.
Sexual health
Good sexual health is important for your overall health and wellbeing.
It means:
- having healthy relationships
- access to safe, inclusive healthcare and information
- being free from coercion, violence, stigma and discrimination.
Find an allied health service
Allied health through life
Allied Health teams are available in the community setting to support people in different stages of life. You or a health professional can make a referral to these services. Contact the teams to find out more.
Support and wellbeing
Allied health services are available in the community and other settings to support mental health. Many services are built into a team or service. Some services may accept self-referrals.
Specialist care with allied health support
For specific conditions, you may be eligible for referral for specialist services. Allied health teams lead or work as part of these specialist teams. You can be referred by your GP or hospital health professional.
Hospital outpatient services
NT Health hospitals may offer outpatient allied health services either as follow up post discharge or from direct referral.
