Royal Commission underway

The Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory started in September 2016.

The joint commissioners are the Hon Margaret White AO and Mr Mick Gooda.

Interim report

The Royal Commission handed down an interim report on 31 March 2017.

The report does not make specific findings or recommendations.

It describes the processes it has followed to engage with the community and gather data, information and insights so far.

The commission will hand down its final report on 1 August 2017.

Next hearings

The next hearings will be held from 19 April in Court 11, Supreme Court, Darwin. 

From 19 to 21 April, the commission expects to hear evidence in response to certain allegations made by Mr Dylan Voller during the December sittings. 

From 24 April, they will continue to hear evidence from those responsible for oversight of youth detention centres.
