Image requirements for custom planning signs

From Friday 21 January 2021, changes will apply to signage for certain planning applications.

The changes mean some developments will use a custom sign with an image instead of a stock sign.

From 24 November 2021, all applications will need to include an image of the proposed development. This will be displayed on your custom sign.

Read below to find out how to submit an image with your application.

How to provide an image

Follow these steps:

Step 1. Prepare your image

Prepare an advertising image for your proposal. The image must be in landscape orientation. It should reflect the proposed development and can include:

  • a perspective
  • an elevation
  • a site plan.

Save the image as a JPEG or PNG file. It should be clear when printed in A4 size.

Step 2. Upload your image

Upload the image when you make your application on Development Applications Online (DAO). If you submit without an image, your application will be returned.

The image will also appear alongside the application details on the DAO website.

Step 3. Submit your application

The submission process varies depending on your type of application.

Development applications

Submit your completed application by midnight on a Tuesday the week before the advertising date. Once your application is accepted, pay the fee by midday the following Monday. This will ensure you make advertising the following Friday.

Other planning applications

Submit your completed application and a planning officer will contact you about any advertising arrangements.

Step 4. Collect your printed sign

Collect your printed sign the day before exhibition begins.

Signs can be collected from Colemans Printing in Darwin or Alice Springs. You can get more details through your DAO account.
