Heat warning

Temperatures across the Northern Territory can be very hot between October and April.

It can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some locations. High humidity in the Top End can also make you tire easily.

Check forecast temperatures before you visit. Find out how to prepare and stay safe in the heat.

This page has the latest information on conditions of the Larapinta Trail.

You must study and carry quality maps if you want to walk the trail.

You should pay particular attention to changes in direction along or near creek lines and watercourses where the grass is thicker.

Before you visit, check if the park is open.

Section Trail condition update
Section 2 and 3 There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to the Jay Creek Trailhead from Hamilton Downs Youth Camp road. Walker access to and from the Jay Creek Trailhead is only permitted in case of an emergency. This means section 2 and 3 can only be accessed via Simpsons Gap or Standley Chasm.
Section 3 and 4 Standley Chasm is privately owned and operated.
All visitors must pay an entry fee and camping fee per person. The fees also apply to those passing through the chasm or using sections 3 and 4 of the Larapinta Trail.

Section 9 and 10 The kiosk at Ormiston Gorge re-opens on 30 March.
To access the food drop storage area, you must collect a key from the Tourism Central Australia Visitor Information Centre in the Alice Springs Todd Mall.
Section 10 and 11 Discovery Parks Glen Helen is closed until further notice. This includes food, fuel, camping and accommodation. Access to Glen Helen Gorge is available via an alternate walking trail from the Glen Helen entry road.

Weather

To find out about weather conditions for the area, go to the Bureau of Meteorology website.

Typical weather from May to August is clear and sunny, often with a chilly breeze.

You will need warm clothes such as thermal wear, a warm hat or beanie and a sleeping bag rated for temperatures lower than -5°C.

Outside of these months the weather is warm to very hot, often reaching temperatures over 40°C.
