Northern Territory and Rizhao City join forces
An economic development agreement for closer relations between the Northern Territory and the Chinese port city of Rizhao is already opening up commercial opportunities between the two centres.
More shipping services between Darwin and China and the development of an Australia China Industry Park in Rizhao are being delivered under the agreement. In addition, Rizhao has also sought official approval to import live cattle shipped from the Darwin Port.
The agreement will assist the Northern Territory to fully reach its potential as outlined in the Asian Engagement, Trade and Investment Strategic Plan 2015-2020. Strategic goals include:
- The Northern Territory will achieve increased economic returns from a diversified range of exports.
- The Northern Territory will be an excellent partner for capacity-building assistance with our near neighbours.
- Long term international investment in the Northern Territory will increase across the natural resources, infrastructure and tourism sectors.
- The Northern Territory will be positioned as a pre-eminent supply and service hub in our region.
A delegation from the Northern Territory is expected to visit Rizhao in November to discuss further investment opportunities around live cattle and tourism.
Rizhao City is a major logistics centre on the coast north of Shanghai and is the home to the largest privately owned port in China which is operated by the Landbridge Group, also the operator of the Darwin Port.
