Frances Bay Precinct Revitalisation
Darwin's Frances Bay is to be revitalised into an exciting waterfront precinct for tourists, locals and boaties.
The Territory Government has begun a market sounding process to gauge private interest in redeveloping the Frances Bay basin – aka the 'Duckpond' – and the adjoining 'Gobi Desert' site.
The area presents a golden opportunity for an imaginative mixed-use redevelopment which would draw visitors in to the overlooked inner-city waterfront location.
The Duckpond has long been at the heart of the Territory's commercial fishing industry.
It is envisioned that the precinct's revitalisation will echo attractive harbourside destinations in cities such as Hobart and Auckland, where visitors can enjoy a drink, meal or catch a cruise.
As the site is owned by the Northern Territory Government, the Department of Lands Planning and the Environment will be seeking feedback on its future use until 30 September 2015.
As well as testing the market for development, the future needs of the Duckpond's existing users will be considered as a key part of the process. The market sounding process will be finalised by the end of the year.
