Firefighter of the year announced

The 2015 Rotary Club of Darwin North Eric Simmons Firefighter of the Year and Volunteer Firefighter of the Year have been announced.

His Honour, the Honourable John Hardy OAM, Administrator of the Northern Territory, presented the two recipients with their awards this week at a ceremony held at the Darwin Fire Station.

Senior Firefighter Bill Gleeson, based at the Berrimah Fire Station, is the Eric Simmons Career Firefighter of the Year. Bill has been instrumental in designing and developing online management systems for the NTFRS that has attracted interstate interest.

Volunteer Captain Damien Shaw from the Humpty Doo Volunteer Fire Brigade is the Eric Simmons Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. Damien joined the Koolpinyah Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1995 before moving to Humpty Doo in 1998. His dedication to keeping his community safe from wildfires saw him advance to the position of team leader in 2000, Vice-Captain in 2004 and Captain in 2008.
