Cyclone Nathan response moves to returning residents

Ex-tropical Cyclone Nathan has been downgraded to a tropical low as it moves over the northwest Arnhem region.

There is a flood warning in place for northern coastal rivers as the weakened system moves west. Damaging wind gusts and heavy rain may lead to flash flooding.

All cyclone warnings have been cancelled and shelters are now closed.

The government is now working on sending hundreds of Warruwi residents back home after they were evacuated from Goulburn Island to Darwin on Monday.

Evacuees are being asked to return to the Foskey Pavilion at Darwin Showgrounds tonight and prepare for flights early on Wednesday morning.

There have been no reported injuries there is minimal damage to homes. Power and water services are back on.

All communities are being advised to boil drinking water and flush toilets with a bucket of water to prevent blockages.

Rain has continued today on Elcho Island. It is intended to re-establish the temporary tent accommodation on Friday, weather permitting.

All schools are open tomorrow with the exception of Warrawi School.
