Queensland groper 

Scientific name

Epinephelus lanceolatus.

Where they live

Queensland groper are commonly found in coral reefs and in shallow waters. 

You can find them in caves, wrecks and estuaries.

Individuals more than a meter long have been caught from shore and in harbours. 

Juveniles can be found in harbours, inshore reefs and estuaries. 

They feed on spiny lobsters, fishes - including small sharks and batoids, juvenile sea turtles and crustaceans.

All cods and gropers greater than 120cm are protected species and must be released unharmed.

Size and age

Queensland groper have been known to grow to 270cm and weigh in at 400kg.
