Mackerel grey 

Scientific name 

Scomberomorus semifasciatus.

Where they live

Grey mackerel are commonly found around coastal headlands, rocky reefs and can also be caught offshore. 

The juveniles are around 4.5 to 10cm in length and are commonly encountered along beaches and close to coastline.

Size and age

They have been known to grow up to 120cm long and weigh in between 10 to 12kg.

Fishing tips

They are pelagic predators, feeding exclusively on baitfish such as sardines and herrings. 

Grey mackerel can be caught with set lines aside from trolling with small lures or cut bait.
