Scientific name

Epinephelus malabaricus.

Where they live

Rockcod (blackspotted) are a common species found in a variety of habitats including coral and rocky reefs, tidal pools, estuaries, mangrove swamps and sandy or mud bottom from shore up to depths of 150m. 

Juveniles can also be found near the shore and in estuaries.

All cods and gropers greater than 120cm are protected species and must be released unharmed.

Size and age

Reported to grow to 234cm and weigh over 150kg.

A maximum overall size limit of 120cm applies to all cod.

All species of grouper and cod over 120cm are a protected species in the Northern Territory.
