Notices to mariners

A Notice to Mariners (NtM) advises mariners of important matters affecting navigational safety, including new hydrographic information, changes in channels and aids to navigation, and other important data.

The Regional Harbourmaster’s Department circulates marine safety information to mariners, organisations and other interested groups through Notice to Mariners.

The Notices may appear in the following formats:

  • Permanent Notice - changes to navigation information which will generally result in a chart correction released by the Australian Hydrographic Service.
    NtM 028/2015
  • Preliminary Notice - a pre-emptive notification of a permanent change.
    NtM 028(P)/2015
  • Temporary Notices - the information will remain valid only for a limited time.
    NtM 028(T)/2015

The Australian Hydrographic Office is the authority responsible for national chart production known as AUS Charts and the circulation of Australian Notices to Mariners that are distributed nationally and internationally.

Information contained in the Northern Territory notices is regularly reproduced in the Australian Notices.

A Notice to Mariners (NtM) is issued to provide important navigational information on Northern Territory waters.

All masters of vessels must also report navigational hazards or dangers.

For more information read the Marine Act 1981.
