Remote arts and culture centres

The Northern Territory (NT) is home to Australia's richest and diverse Indigenous art centres and galleries.

Many are located in remote Aboriginal communities and you will need a permit from the relevant land council to visit them.

Elcho Island Arts

Elcho Island Art and Craft is an Aboriginal-owned art centre in Galiwinku, north-east Arnhem Land, 550km east of Darwin.

Injalak Arts and Crafts

At the Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre you can see a very high standard of Aboriginal art.

There are traditional painters, bark painters, basket weavers and screen printers.

Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre is in Gunbalanya, also known as Oenpelli, a small Aboriginal township close to the East Alligator River.

Maningrida Arts and Culture

Maningrida Arts and Culture represents more than 700 artists who work with all of the following:

  • bark paintings
  • timber sculptures
  • fibre art
  • didgeridoos
  • regalia
  • prints
  • bronze sculptures.

Anindilyakwa Art and Cultural Centre

Anindilyakwa Art was started to help the Indigenous artists of Groote Eylandt promote and market their arts and crafts.

Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre

The Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, in Yirrkala near Nhulunbuy, has a collection of Yolgnu Aboriginal bark paintings, carvings and artefacts.

Milingimbi Art and Culture

Milingimbi is an island community off the coast of Arnhem Land.

The centre shows the long tradition of creative and cultural works on the island, including bark paintings, carvings and weavings.

Waralungku Arts

Waralungku Arts has a collection of contemporary Indigenous arts from the Gulf region of the NT.

It is an Aboriginal owned and run arts centre in Borroloola.

Tiwi Design is one of Australia's oldest and artistically diverse art centres.

Munupi Arts and Crafts

Munupi Arts and Crafts is on Melville Island's north-western coastline at Pirlangimpi (Garden Point) and is the most recently formed art centre on the Tiwi Islands.

Jilamara Arts and Crafts

Jilamara Arts and Crafts is an Indigenous-owned art centre in Milikapiti on Melville Island.

It represents emerging and established Indigenous artists practicing Tiwi art.
