Financial help for isolated students

Mid term travel scheme

You may be able to get help through the mid-term travel scheme towards the cost of journeys to reunite you and your child at times other then half-semester or semester breaks, if they board away from their principal centre of residence in order to attend a Northern Territory (NT) primary, middle or senior school.

Conditions

A maximum of four return trips per year will be allowed.

The scheme must be used to enable:

  • your child to return to their principal centre of residence or
  • you to visit your child at the boarding facility.

Payments will be calculated at the most economical form of travel available.

If you believe the most economical form of transport would create undue hardship for your child due to overnight stops or excessive hours of travel, please advise the student assistance office in the Department of Education before your child travels.

If the method of travel is by private vehicle, the amount payable will be at the rate determined for the Conveyance subsidy scheme.

If air travel is used, payment will be at the rate of the most direct and economical service at student concession rates.

Who can apply

To apply you must comply with all of the following:

  • you must live in the NT and your child must attend a boarding facility in the NT
  • you must be approved for benefits under the Australian Government's Assistance for isolated children scheme (AIC) basic boarding allowance
  • you are not eligible for this allowance if you are in receipt of ABSTUDY grants or approved for the AIC second home allowance.
