VET and apprenticeships and traineeships in school

If you’re a student interested in learning workplace skills, you might consider doing a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT).

SBAT allows you to learn hands-on and theory-based workplace skills, and get a nationally accredited qualification.

It combines:

• paid work
• vocational education and training (VET)
• school studies or the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).

School-based apprentices or trainees are employed by their host business and will be paid a wage.

Who is eligible

Students must:

• be at least 15 years old
• be able to attend at least 48 days per year of paid work from the start date
• get evidence of endorsement for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship from their principal.

The employer, school, student and parent must arrange set days per week, which the student will attend their apprenticeship or traineeship.
