Introduction

This guide provides information on where to find Northern Territory (NT) geoscientific information and mineral and energy exploration reports.

This information includes all of the following:

The majority of the information can be accessed online or through the Minerals and Energy InfoCentre either in Darwin or Alice Springs. Drill cores can be viewed and accessed at the core libraries in Darwin and Alice Springs.

NTGS Updates provide an email alert service for new products and related information.

Minerals and Energy InfoCentre

The Minerals and Energy InfoCentre provides the following information:

  • mining and geoscience information
  • minerals and energy industry exploration reports
  • Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) products
  • resource industry news.

You can access the information in the following ways:

  • most products, information and data are available through the online information systems
  • you can get copies of products over the counter if you visit the InfoCentre
  • you can make a request to have material posted to you
  • you can make an enquiry or order copies of products and data not available online via the InfoCentre’s online enquiry form.

Large datasets can't be downloaded but can be ordered. You may have to supply your own portable hard drive for bulk requests.

All maps, reports and data are free.

InfoCentre libraries

The InfoCentre libraries in Darwin and Alice Springs hold books, journals, government reports and maps about geoscience, mining, minerals and energy in the NT.

InfoCentre staff can assist you to locate timely and relevant material and to use the library catalogue and other online databases.

Anyone can use the library collections on site, but only department staff can borrow directly from the InfoCentre.

Books and journal articles can be borrowed through public or research libraries using inter library loan (use NUC code XMD).

Exploration reports and data

You can access reports by the research industry which detail exploration activities, the processing and interpretation of data and conclusions.

The collection consists of extensive datasets of geophysical surveys, drilling and geochemistry data. The major types of geophysical data available are:

  • magnetic
  • radiometric
  • gravity
  • electromagnetic
  • seismic.

The exploration reports and data are submitted by explorers must be submitted under the following acts:

Initially they are confidential but become publicly available after specified periods or when titles cease.

You can search and download mineral exploration, petroleum drilling and geophysical survey reports and data on the geoscience exploration and mining information system.

You can also search for geophysical surveys, reports and some drilling and geochemistry data on the spatial territory resource information kit for exploration website.

Northern Territory Geological Survey publications and maps

NT Geological Survey (NTGS) produce maps, datasets, reports and other publications about the geology, geophysics and commodities of the Northern Territory (NT).

This includes:

  • geological maps in 1:100000 and 1:250000 series with explanatory notes
  • NT wide geophysical and geology maps at 1:2500000 scale
  • digital information packages including GIS data, 3D models and databases
  • Hylogger data packages (HDP)
  • geophysical data and imagery.

You can access these NTGS products using the following systems and services:

For more information on the latest NTGS data and publications, go to the Resourcing the Territory website.

Geology and Mineral Resources of the Northern Territory

The Geology and Mineral Resources of the Northern Territory is an essential reference book that covers the:

  • history of geology in the NT
  • commodities
  • detailed studies of each geological region.

Download the book and individual chapters on GEMIS. You can also buy a hard copy online.
