Outlaw motorcycle gangs and your liquor licence

Members of outlaw motorcycle gangs are banned from wearing anything that identifies their club in Northern Territory (NT) licensed premises.

The ban only applies to outlaw motorcycle gang members. Other motorcycle clubs are not affected.

Banned items include any item of clothing, jewellery or other personal belonging that displays any of the following:

  • the name of the identified club
  • the club patch, insignia, logo of an identified organisation
  • any image, symbol, motif, abbreviation, acronym or other form of writing that indicates membership, or association of, an identified organisation including:
    • the 1% symbol
    • numbers such as 13, 15, 18 and 81.

You and your employees must ask outlaw motorcycle gang members to remove any clothing or items that identify their club.

Members who remove these items may stay at your premises and drink alcohol.

Members who refuse to remove these items must leave your premises.

It is not a breach of your licence conditions if you have tried to remove the person from your premises.

If you feel it is unsafe to ask someone to remove an offending item, call NT Police on 131 444.

You should also call the police if a person wearing outlaw motorcycle gang clothing refuses to leave, or if you or your staff feel threatened.

That way, you won’t breach your licence conditions.

You must make sure that your staff know how to recognise colours, insignia, identifiers or emblems associated with outlaw motorcycle gangs.

New staff might not recognise gang clothing and serve gang members as normal.

If this happens, you should try to remove the gang members as soon as possible.

There are different outlaw motorcycle clubs that exist in Australia.
