Liquor tasting

Liquor tastings must be limited to 30ml of any type of liquor. You can serve a patron one sample of each different product.

You must follow the responsible service of alcohol guidelines.

Who can hold a liquor tasting

You can hold a liquor tasting or promotion at any of the following venues:

  • liquor store
  • supermarket
  • licensed venue
  • drive-through bottle shop, under certain conditions.

Drive-through bottle shops

You can hold a liquor tasting or promotion in a drive-through bottle shop, provided that:

  • the store is separate from the drive-through area
  • patrons enter the store through a turnstile
  • patrons exit past a cash register or counter
  • tastings are not conducted in the driveway
  • you do not supply liquor tastings to drivers and their passengers.

You should not approach drivers or their passengers to advise them of a promotion or tasting. However, you can display signs inviting patrons inside to participate.

Liquor tasting and liquor licences

You don't  need a liquor licence to hold a liquor tasting or promotion provided that:

  • the liquor tasting or promotion is free
  • tasting servings are limited to 30ml for any type of liquor.

You should apply for a liquor licence if your liquor tasting or promotion involves any kind of fee. This includes an entry fee or a ticket to a fundraiser.

Liquor licence holders are responsible for all tastings and promotions on their premises. If you plan to hold a tasting or promotion outside the scope of these guidelines, you must apply to temporarily change your liquor licence conditions.

Giveaways

Open bottles and cans

You may offer each patron one open bottle or can as a giveaway. These must be consumed on the premises.

Unopened bottles and cans

You may offer patrons unopened bottles or cans of product as a giveaway. These must be consumed off the premises.

Food

You don't need to provide food alongside a tasting or promotion unless this is a condition of your liquor licence.
