Financial help to employ an apprentice or trainee

The Employer Apprenticeship and Traineeship Support Scheme (EATSS) offers financial assistance for businesses and organisations who employ apprentices and trainees in the Northern Territory (NT).

The incentive payments can help your organisation pay for some of the costs involved in employing and training apprentices and trainees.

Who can get payments

To receive a payment you must be an NT-based business, group training or local government organisation and employ an apprentice or trainee who meets all of the following:

  • is studying at the Certificate III to Diploma level
  • has a training contract registered with Australian Apprenticeships NT starting on or after 3 April 2018
  • is an Australian citizen, permanent Australian resident or a New Zealand citizen who has resided in Australia for a minimum of six months, and
  • is an NT resident.

What you can get

There are four types of payments available:

If you employ an apprentice or trainee starting their study you can get:

  • $1,000 commencement payment
  • additional $1,000 commencement payment - if your business or organisation address is in a regional or remote location or, if your apprentice or trainee meets one of the equity group requirements.

If you employ an apprentice or trainee who started their study during previous employment you can get:

  • $500 re-commencement payment
  • additional $500 re-commencement payment - if your business or organisation address is in a regional or remote location or, if your apprentice or trainee meets one of the equity group requirements.

Re-commencement payments apply when you employ an apprentice or trainee who has already completed part of their training during employment with another employer.

Getting additional payments

To receive additional payments you must meet either one of the following:

1. your business or organisation address is in a location classified as regional or remote for this scheme

2. your apprentice or trainee meets at least one of the following equity group criteria:

  • has a physical, psychological or intellectual disability confirmed by a medical certificate
  • identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • is an Australian visa holder who:
    • does not have work or study restrictions
    • is not the primary provisional visa holder of a Skilled, Business Innovation and Investment, Student, Work or Holiday visa, including subclass 489 and 188 visas
    • is not the primary visa holder of a 457 or Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) visa
    • has a visa valid for the duration of the apprenticeship or traineeship based on the total number of nominal training hours.

You should check visa entitlements and conditions with your future apprentice or trainee before you finalise enrolment or sign a contract.

Receiving payments

After registering a training contract for your apprentice or trainee, Australian Apprenticeships NT will check if you can receive a payment under the scheme and will make the payment automatically.

If you do not want to receive any payments you will need to let them know in advance.

Australian Apprenticeships NT will also check if your business or organisation can receive any support from the Australian Government.
