Financial help to employ an apprentice or trainee

NT Occupational Shortage Employer Incentive Scheme

If you have a Northern Territory (NT) business that employs an apprentice or trainee, you can apply for up to $4,000 through this scheme.

Who can apply

To apply for this incentive, your apprentice or trainee must meet all the following criteria:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who has lived in Australia for at least six months
  • be a new full-time employee who is studying for a qualification attracting incentives
  • have started a registered training contract on the day or after the incentive round was announced
  • not have completed a Certificate III, IV or vocational education and training (VET) Diploma qualification in the last seven years.

You can claim this incentive once per employee and up to three times in total for each round of funding.

Before you apply

To claim for the first incentive payment of $3,000, your apprentice or trainee must have a registered training contract with you for six months.

To claim a further $1,000, your apprentice or trainee must stay working with you for at least two years or have finished their training.

How to apply

Follow these steps:

Step 1. Fill in the claim form from Australian Apprenticeships Support Network NT. You will be sent claim forms if you qualify for the scheme.

Step 2. Submit your claim form to Australian Apprenticeship Support Network NT by post or in person, or by email to
