Returning to work after injury or illness

You may need help when returning to work after a serious illness or injury.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is any activity that helps you return to the physical, economic and social state you were in before the injury or illness.

You must cooperate with a reasonable rehabilitation and return to work program organised by your employer or their insurer.

Rehabilitation services can include all of the following:

  • education and counselling
  • gradual re-introduction of work
  • retraining for a different job
  • workplace assessment and advice
  • liaison with your employer
  • advice on other work possibilities.

Going back to work

If your illness or injury has prevents you from doing your regular work for over 28 days, then your employer must discuss a return to work plan with you.
