NT residents: apply for long term traveller registration

Northern Territory (NT) residents who are intending to travel interstate as a genuine tourist or for recreation for more than 12 months can apply for long term traveller status.

This will allow you to do any of the following:

  • renew the registration for NT registered vehicles from interstate - once only
  • submit an interstate roadworthy inspection certificate from an approved inspection facility (if needed).

Important information on long term traveller registration

Rules in other jurisdictions may make this NT traveller status invalid.

You may need to transfer your vehicle and driver licence to an interstate authority if you have exceeded that state's maximum period. This is usually three months.

You must check with the interstate transport authority whether your NT traveller registration is valid for use in that state or territory.

Before you apply

To qualify for long term traveller registration you must:

  • be an established MVR customer
  • apply for long term traveller status prior to leaving the NT if possible
  • be the owner or operator of any NT registered vehicle/s you intend to use when travelling interstate
  • intend to return to the NT within two years
  • provide a postal address within the NT so the MVR can send out registration and licensing documents and any other notices such as speed camera fines
  • provide the details of your vehicle including make, model, VIN, engine number
  • be a genuine tourist or interstate traveller principally for the purposes of recreation or pleasure.

You must make a separate application for each vehicle being used for the intended travel.

You should renew your NT driver licence for the duration of your trip or find out more information on how to apply for a long term traveller licence.
