Drivers with a medical condition or disability
Driver health is important and all drivers must meet medical standards relevant to the class of licence you hold.
Medical standards for drivers are set out in the Assessing Fitness to Drive publication on the Austroads website.
Temporary or permanent medical conditions can lead to a licence suspension. A licence suspended for medical reasons can be reinstated once the health standard has been regained.
In reality, few conditions stop the re-issue of a driver licence.
If you have any questions about medical fitness to hold a driver licence, contact the MVR on 1300 654 628 or ask your health professional for advice.
Under the Northern Territory (NT) Motor Vehicles Act, all NT health professionals must notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles when they reasonably believe that a person they have examined is physically or mentally incapable of driving or is unfit to drive a vehicle. Read the law.
