Sit a driving test

You should read all of the following before sitting your driving test:

Recording your driving test

From 1 September 2016 all driving tests conducted by an authorised class C driving examiner must be recorded. A camera will be used to record the road environment in front of the car during the test as well as recording you and your driving examiner inside the vehicle.

Your driving examiner is required to hold on to the recording for up to six months following your driving test.

The Motor Vehicle Registry Licensing Compliance Unit will randomly request a copy of recorded driving tests from the driving examiner to make sure driving tests are being conducted to the required standard.

Book a driving test

If you are not enrolled in DriveSafe NT, you will need to pay a practical driving test fee

When you are ready to take the practical driving test, you can book with an authorised examiner in the following areas:

Before your test

You must have read A guide to the Driving Test (1.2 mb) before you take your test.

You must also have held your learner licence for a continuous period of at least six months.

If you want to use your own car for the test, it must be road worthy and registered.

When you take your test

You should aim to arrive at the test starting location at least 10 minutes before the test and make sure you bring your current learner licence.

About the test

From 1 September 2016 a camera will be used to record all driving tests conducted by an Authorised Class C driving examiner.

The driving examiner will sit in the front passenger seat while you take your driving test on the road. It will take about 40 minutes.

The driving examiner will assess your:

  • observation skills - use of mirrors, blind spot checks
  • speed management road positioning
  • decision making response to hazards
  • vehicle control.

Any of the following will result in the immediate failure of your test:

  • fail to obey traffic lights, signs or road markings
  • fail to give way
  • drive without due care, attention or consideration for other road users, or in a dangerous manner
  • exceed the speed limit
  • do something that causes the driving examiner to intervene to prevent a crash or dangerous situation
  • failure or refusal to follow reasonable directions from the driving examiner.

The driving examiner will tell you at the end whether you have passed your driving test.

If you have passed the practical driving test the results will remain valid for 12 months. If you do not upgrade your learner licence within this period, you will need to complete another practical driving test.

If you do not pass your driving test, you can re-book another test.
