Commercial vehicle licence (CVL): apply or renew

After becoming an accredited operator, you must hold a commercial vehicle licence (CVL) before operating a commercial passenger vehicle (CPV).

The Department of Transport will assess your application for a CVL. 

This includes:

  • how you will be operating the vehicle 
  • the type of vehicle you will be operating.

How to apply for a new CVL

To apply for a new CVL you must follow these steps: 

Step 1. Fill in the application for commercial vehicle licence (178.2 kb).

Step 2. Submit your application by mail or in person at a MVR office.

Step 3. Your application will be assessed by the Commercial Passenger Vehicle branch - this may take up to 10 days.

Step 4. You will be notified of your application assessment by letter. 

Step 5. If approved you must take your letter and application form to the MVR office where you will pay the fee.

How to renew your CVL

To renew your CVL you must follow these steps:

Step 1. Fill in the renewal for commercial vehicle licence (178.2 kb).

Step 2. Submit your application by mail or in person to a MVR office.

You can also pay your fee by Visa or MasterCard by calling 1300 654 628 once the MVR has received your application.   

Fees can be paid in person by the above credit cards, EFTPOS or cash.
