Register your heavy vehicle in the NT


Starting 1 August 2019, the following changes apply to heavy vehicles:

  • registration labels won't be issued or needed on vehicles more than 4.5 tonnes.
  • owners will have the option to apply for national heavy vehicle number plates.

To register a heavy vehicle in the Northern Territory (NT) you should follow these steps:

Step 1. Find out who can register a heavy vehicle.

Step 2. Nominate an operator of the heavy vehicle.

Step 3. Arrange for a heavy vehicle inspection.

Step 4. Apply to register your vehicle and pay a fee.

You must have a roadworthy inspection in order to register your heavy vehicle. A temporary licence may be issued on a case by case assessment for the purpose of repairs.

There are also specific rules for registering special purpose vehicles.
