Apply for medium rigid licence - MR

To apply for a medium rigid (MR) licence you must meet all of the following:

  • hold a Northern Territory (NT) drivers licence
  • have held a C class licence or LR licence for at least 12 months
  • pass a heavy vehicle eyesight test
  • learn to drive a medium rigid vehicle from a driver who holds a current class MR or higher licence
  • pass a rigid heavy vehicle theory test at a MVR office if you haven't done so for a previous rigid class licence
    • not required if you do an approved training course
  • pass either of the below practical assessments:
    • a final competency assessment organised through your approved training provider
    • or a competency test with an authorised heavy vehicle driving examiner.

Before you apply for your medium rigid licence you will need to complete both theory and practical assessments.

The vehicle used for your class MR practical driving assessment must be a two axle rigid vehicle with a GVM greater than 8 tonnes, and be loaded to at least 75% of the vehicle's rated GVM.

When you have passed your training course and practical competency assessment or test, you then need to go to your nearest MVR office to apply for your MR licence.

Recording your driving test

Your class MR practical driving assessment will be recorded by an authorised heavy vehicle driving examiner.

A camera will record the road environment in front of the vehicle during the assessment. You will both be recorded inside the vehicle.

Your examiner must keep the recording for six months after the date of your assessment.

At any time MVR may request a copy of the recorded assessment from the heavy vehicle driving examiner.

You can apply by submitting your application in person, by mail or by email.

You can only apply by email or mail if the MVR has your digital photo on file.

In person

You will need to give the MVR your:

  • statement of attainment and final competency form
  • or competency test form.

You will then be given a new MR licence once you have paid the licence fee. You can pay your fee in person by MasterCard, Visa, cash, cheque or EFTPOS.
