Alcohol ignition lock costs

All AIL services are paid for by you including:

  • installation
  • lease
  • service
  • removal of the lock.

Costs may vary according to the type of AIL and supplier.

You can choose to have as many vehicles fitted with an AIL as you like at your own expense. If you are eligible for a subsidy, you will only receive the subsidy for one vehicle.

If you live in a remote part of the Northern Territory (NT) you should contact a supplier to find out what your options are.

Low income earner subsidy

The low income earner subsidy applies to the costs of installing, removing and leasing an approved AIL.

You may receive the subsidy if:

  • you hold a valid Commonwealth (Centrelink) Health Care Card, or an income statement issued by Centrelink clearly demonstrating that you receive the maximum rate of pension
  • you are a NT resident
  • you have been given a court order in the NT to install an AIL
  • the vehicle the AIL will be fitted to is registered in the NT.

If you meet the criteria, you can fill in the subsidy section of the application for a Northern Territory alcohol ignition lock licence (300.7 kb) when you apply for your AIL licence.

Remote resident subsidy

You may receive the remote resident subsidy for unscheduled services for your AIL if the service provider is more than 150km from Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy or Tennant Creek.
