Licence classes and conditions

You can only drive a vehicle if you have the correct licence for that type of vehicle, and the right conditions on your licence.

This page provides information on licence types and the main licence conditions.

C class driver licence

If you have a C class licence, you may drive a vehicle that:

  • has a gross vehicle mass less than 4.5 tonnes
  • is a specific type - for example, a construction or agricultural vehicle such as:
    • tractors
    • harvesters
    • front end loaders
    • road rollers
    • forklifts
    • graders.

Light rigid vehicle - LR

This vehicle has:

  • two axles
  • a gross vehicle mass of more than 4.5 tonnes and up to eight tonnes.

Medium rigid vehicle - MR

This vehicle has:

  • two axles
  • a gross vehicle mass of more than eight tonnes.

Heavy rigid vehicle - HR

This vehicle has:

  • three or more axles
  • a gross vehicle mass of more than eight tonnes.

Heavy combination vehicle - HC

This vehicle is either:

  • a prime mover with a single semi-trailer that has:
    • a GVM of more than nine tonnes
    • plus any unladen converter dolly
  • a rigid motor vehicle towing a trailer that has:
    • a GVM of more than nine tonnes
    • plus any unladen converter dolly.

A multi-combination vehicle MC - road train

This is any vehicle or combination of vehicles other than a motorcycle or trike.

To upgrade to a heavy vehicle licence, you must learn to drive the vehicle type and pass a heavy vehicle theory test.

R class rider licence

If you have an R class licence, you may ride a motorcycle. This includes:

  • a motorcycle that has a side car attached to it supported by a third wheel or
  • a motor vehicle that has three wheels and is designed to be ridden the same as a motorcycle.

The following conditions may be applied to your driver licence in the Northern Territory.

Drive automatic vehicle only - A

You must only drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission.

Synchromesh Transmission - B

The licence holder may only drive a heavy vehicle requiring a class HR, HC or MC licence if fitted with a synchromesh or automatic transmission.

Alcohol ignition lock - I

The licence holder may only drive a motor vehicle that is fitted with an approved alcohol ignition lock.

LAMS Learner Approved Motorcycle restriction - R

The licence holder is restricted to riding a Learner Approved Motorcycle that has a power to weight ratio not exceeding 150 kilowatts per tonne and an engine capacity not exceeding 660 cubic centimetres (cc).

Glasses or lenses required to drive - S

You must wear corrective lenses at all times while driving. This condition will only be applied when you require corrective lenses to pass the eye test for fitness to drive.

Zero % blood alcohol when you drive - Z

You must observe zero blood alcohol concentration restriction.

Modified vehicle required - V

The licence holder may only drive a motor vehicle fitted with any of the following specified driver aids or modification as directed in writing by the Registrar of Motor Vehicle:

Steering spinner knob - left - VA

You may only drive vehicles fitted with a left-hand spinner knob.

Steering spinner knob - right - VB

You may only drive vehicles fitted with a right-hand spinner knob.

Power steering only - VC

You may only drive vehicles fitted with power steering.

Automatic vehicle only - VD

You may only drive vehicles fitted with an automatic transmission.

Modified indicator arm - left - VE

You may only drive vehicles fitted with an extended indicator arm - left.

Modified indicator arm - right - VF

You may only drive vehicles fitted with an extended indicator arm - right.

Head operated indicators - VG

You may only drive a vehicle fitted with indicators operated by head movements.

Accelerator left of brake - VH

You may only drive a vehicle with an accelerator pedal fitted to the left of the brake pedal.

Hand operated foot controls - VI

The licence holder may only drive a vehicle fitted with hand-operated controls for brakes and accelerator.

External mirrors left and right - VJ

You may only drive vehicles fitted with external mirrors to the left and right-hand side of the vehicle.

Wide-angle interior mirror - VK

You can only drive vehicle fitted with a wide-angle interior rear view mirror.

Electronic embedded steering spinner knob - VL

The licence holder may only drive a vehicle fitted with an electronic embedded steering spinner knob.

Specified licence conditions apply - X

The licence holder has been issued a licence that is subject to any of the following conditions or limitations.

Periodic medical review required - XA

You have been issued a licence subject to a periodic medical review.

Annual criminal history check - XB

The driver licence is issued subject to an annual criminal history check.

For training and assessment only - XC

You are issued a licence for training and assessment purposes only.

This is usually issued if you need a driving test or rehabilitation assessment before your licence renewal or re-licensing after a medical suspension.

No driving between sunset and sunrise - XD

You are not to drive between sunset and sunrise.

Licence class area restricted - XF

The driver licence is only valid in a specific area.

Drive in company of rehabilitation service - XG

You can only drive when accompanied by an instructor experienced in rehabilitation training.

This is applied if you are suffering from a medical condition and require training prior to re-applying for your driver licence.

In company of full licence holder - XH

The licence holder may only drive when accompanied by a person holding a full licence for the class of vehicle being driven.

Not to exceed 80 km/h in car - XI

The licence holder must not drive a motor vehicle not including a motorcycle at a speed of more than 80km/h.

Zero % BAC - XJ

The licence holder must observe zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

Zero % BAC when riding a motorcycle - XK

The licence holder must observe zero blood alcohol concentration while riding a motorcycle.

Not to exceed 80km/h on a motorcycle - XM

The licence holder must not exceed 80km/h while riding a motorcycle.

No pillion on a motorcycle - XN

The licence holder must not carry a pillion passenger while riding a motorcycle.

Must wear approved helmet - XP

The licence holder must wear approved motorcycle rider's helmet.

Refer to driver's instrument - XQ

The licence holder may only drive subject to specific conditions other than those listed.

Lenses when driving a vehicle weighing more than eight tonnes - XR

The licence holder must wear corrective lenses at all times while driving a commercial passenger vehicle or a vehicle over eight tonnes.

LAMS approved motorcycles only - XS

The licence holder may only ride a LAMS approved motorcycle.

Automatic only heavy vehicle for HR and above - XU

The licence holder may only drive a heavy vehicle, class HR, HC and MC, fitted with an automatic transmission.

Instructor for class R only - XV

The instructor may only teach a person to ride a motorcycle for fee or reward.

DS remote instructor only - XW

The instructor may only teach participants of the DriveSafe NT remote program.
